The Beginning of Passages Malibu
Pax Prentiss spent ten years of his life struggling with a serious drug and alcohol addiction. His chemical addiction to marijuana, alcohol, cocaine and heroin put eventually him in the hospital, where he finally asked his father Chris for help. It was the beginning of Passages Malibu.
Chris was relieved his son was seeking help for his drug and alcohol addiction, which had been very hard on the family over the years. Pax had lied and cheated to those who cared about him the most, even going so far as to forge checks to fund his addiction. Now, after promising to reform, all of that was going to come to an end.
Overcoming, however, addiction was not so easy. Luxury rehab centers and 12-step programs would sometimes succeed in ridding Pax of the chemical dependency, though nothing could resolve his desire to abuse substances. He would do fine for a while, only to relapse upon completion. The luxury rehab workers, therapists and other staff members would tell Chris and Pax that this was going to be a lifelong problem.
This negative prediction was discouraging to Pax. It made him want to use drugs and alcohol to escape the shame of being an “addict” in their words. How was he supposed to find sobriety and simultaneously confess that he was powerless to a disease like they were always asking him to do?
Chris and Pax felt that they were being offered an outdated philosophy by the drug and alcohol rehab industry. Pax was not powerless. After all, he had made the decision to change on his own. More importantly, he was not sick with a disease.
Chris and Pax decided that permanent sobriety was possible after all, and that they would not accept any lackluster results in its place. They researched various alternative holistic healing therapies and began to view addiction with a deeper understanding, one which previous luxury rehab centers did not allow or embrace.
By borrowing from the Eastern and Western addiction philosophies that spoke to them the most, Chris and Pax designed an all-natural drug and alcohol treatment program for Pax using modern holistic techniques. Pax used what he had learned to identify the underlying causes of his addiction and remove them safely.
By the end of it all, Pax had healed himself from drug and alcohol addiction in mind, body and spirit. All of this was made possible once the negative labeling and incorrect assumptions were removed. Best of all, Pax had done this without any prescription addiction medication or other chemicals.
Chris and Pax went on to become the co-founders of Passages Malibu in 2001. Establishing Passages Malibu was the best way to celebrate Pax’s first year of successful sobriety, and the California luxury rehab center has gone on to help hundreds of people every year.
